Environmental Technology Verification Programs

350Solutions staff managed or lead the verification of over 45 innovative technologies that provided potential environmental benefits for the US EPA Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) program, NYSERDA, and several commercial clients from 2003-2013. Our staff managed the EPA Greenhouse Gas Technology Center, a center focused on verifying the performance of commercial-ready technologies that produce, mitigate, monitor or sequester greenhouse gas emissions. The center concluded operations in September 2013. Several technologies were verified in joint programs with the EPA GHG Center and NYSERDA, largely focused on distributed generation and combined heat and power technologies. In addition, 350Solutions staff also completed several technology verifications focused on clean transportation technologies for NYSERDA and private commercial clients.

Current verification programs utilizing the ISO 14034 ETV standard are being completed for technologies in the cleantech sector – clean energy, air emissions, and water treatment and monitoring technologies.

The EPA GHG Center verified technologies in a range of categories, including:

  • advanced energy production
  • waste-to-energy conservation
  • oil and gas production
  • transmission and other energy efficiency technologies

This program’s goal was to demonstrate and evaluate the feasibility and performance of commercially available emission control technologies in reducing emissions of particulate matter (PM) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) from non-road equipment through real world demonstration and in-use testing. Fifteen combinations of non-road equipment and diesel particulate filter, diesel oxidation catalysts, and selective catalytic reduction technologies were demonstrated on non-road construction equipment ranging from skid steer loaders to off-road haul trucks. The program involved:

  • completion of emissions and equipment inventories for construction equipment in NYS
  • selection and installation of emission reduction technologies for non-road equipment
  • development of duty-cycles for non-road equipment
  • evaluation of emission reductions via use on on-board emissions monitoring systems while equipment was used in real world operations.

350Solutions staff managed a program to demonstrate and evaluate the performance of novel technologies for on-board real-time measurement of particulate emissions from diesel vehicle exhaust. The program evaluated nine different technologies for measurement of particulate emissions (particulate mass, particle number, or particle concentration). A comparison between technologies and laboratory methods was performed. In addition, technologies were evaluated while mounted on-board diesel on-road vehicles.
